Tensions between India and Pakistan have flared up again following a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that left 26 Hindu pilgrims dead and dozens injured. On April 28, 2025, Indian military officials reported fresh ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Baramulla and Poonch sectors, with heavy cross-border firing lasting several hours.
According to Indian authorities, militant groups based in Pakistan are suspected of orchestrating the Pahalgam assault. The Indian Army retaliated strongly, launching a “calibrated response” against Pakistani forward posts allegedly providing cover to infiltrators. Pakistan, in turn, accused India of unprovoked aggression, claiming civilian casualties in border villages.
This new round of clashes threatens to undo the fragile ceasefire agreement reached in 2021 after nearly two decades of conflict. Regional powers like China and the United Nations have urged both nations to exercise restraint and resume diplomatic dialogue. However, with India heading into a critical election season, nationalist sentiment is running high, making de-escalation more difficult.
Security has been ramped up across Kashmir, with curfews imposed in several towns. Meanwhile, Indian intelligence agencies are on high alert, warning of potential follow-up attacks. The situation remains tense as diplomatic backchannels struggle to prevent a full-blown crisis.
