India’s U20 women’s football team has been placed in Group D for the upcoming AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers, the Asian Football Confederation announced today. The tournament, set to be held later this year in Vietnam, will see India compete against South Korea, Thailand, and Turkmenistan.
Head coach Priya Kumari expressed cautious optimism, saying the team was preparing rigorously. “South Korea is among the best in Asia, but we believe we have the talent and spirit to challenge strong opponents,” she stated at a press conference.
India’s U20 team has shown steady progress in recent years, highlighted by improved performances in friendly tournaments and regional championships. Several players from the national youth team have already been scouted by clubs participating in India’s top women’s league.
The AFC U20 Women’s Championship acts as a qualifier for the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, making it a crucial stepping stone for India’s ambitions to make a mark in global football. India’s first match against Thailand is scheduled for September 5, 2025.
